⚠️ Winter Weather Safety Notice – Town of Hancock ⚠️ Due to the severe snow and ice storm forecast for this weekend, the Town of Hancock wants to ensure all residents stay safe, warm, and informed. Hazardous travel conditions, potential power outages, and dangerously cold temperatures are expected. Hancock NY is expecting upwards of 10-18" of snow according to the National Weather Service, please get supplies early and stay warm, and stay indoors as much as possible. ⸻ 🚧 Road Safety Tips • Avoid unnecessary travel during the storm, especially after dark. • Roads may be snow-covered or icy, even if they appear clear. • If you must drive: • Reduce speed and allow extra stopping distance. • Keep headlights on and fully clear snow and ice from your vehicle. • Carry emergency supplies such as blankets, water, snacks, and a phone charger. • Stay clear of snowplows and give them plenty of room to work. • If your vehicle begins to slide, do not slam on the brakes — ease off the accelerator and steer gently. ⸻ 🔥 Home Heating Safety Tips • Use space heaters safely: • Keep them at least 3 feet away from anything flammable. • Never leave them unattended or use them while sleeping. • Never use ovens, grills, or generators indoors, as this can cause deadly carbon monoxide buildup. • Ensure carbon monoxide and smoke detectors are working and have fresh batteries. • Keep cabinet doors open under sinks to help prevent pipes from freezing. • If using a fireplace or wood stove, make sure vents and chimneys are clear and properly ventilated. ⸻ 🚧 Town of Hancock Warming Center If you lose power or heat during the storm, Hancock Town Hall 📍 661 W Main Street will open as a Warming and Safety Center beginning at 2:00 PM on Saturday, January 24th. 🌨️ Winter Weather Warning & Travel Conditions – Hancock, NY (Delaware County) Today & Tonight • Snow showers likely; light accumulation (around 1″ to 3" possible), especially earlier in the day. Roads may be slippery and snow-covered in spots as snow sticks to cold surfaces. • Temperatures near freezing make black ice possible, especially overnight and on untreated secondary roads. Next Few Days • Cold temperatures continue with periodic chances for snow showers. • Gusty winds at times may reduce visibility and increase drifting on open sections of rural routes. 🚗 Road Conditions & Advisory Info • New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT) winter travel information (via 511NY) shows ongoing snow/ice on many state routes where crews are plowing and treating. The advisory message from NYSDOT cautions travelers to avoid travel when winter weather makes driving difficult and to check conditions before heading out. • Even if major corridors like the Thruway are clearer farther west, local highways and rural roads near Hancock may still be icy or snow-covered, especially early in the day or through overnight hours. ⚠️ Winter Travel Tips — Stay Safe • Slow down: Reduced speeds help with traction on slick surfaces. • Increase following distances: It takes longer to stop on ice and packed snow. • Avoid unnecessary travel: If conditions worsen, staying off the roads is the safest choice. • Check the latest before leaving: Use 511NY (NYSDOT) or local weather services to get updated road and weather info.

As we gather with loved ones and enjoy this special time of year, please take a moment to stay informed about the weather and travel conditions through Friday evening. 🌨️ Weather Update (Now through Friday): • Today into Christmas Day — mostly cloudy with chilly temperatures and a chance of snow showers. Temps will be in the 30s, so expect some wintry sparkle out there. • Friday — snow is likely, especially in the afternoon and evening, which may create slippery road conditions, black ice, and reduced visibility. 🚗 Travel & Road Safety: With snow and cold conditions on the way, please take extra care on the roads. Drive slowly, give extra space between vehicles, and be prepared for slippery spots — especially later in the week when snow chances increase.
